Pakistan uses a progressive slab system under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001. Follow these three steps to calculate your exact tax liability for Tax Year 2025-26.
Start with your annual gross income — salary, freelance earnings, or business revenue. Multiply monthly salary by 12 to get your annual figure. This is the number you will apply the slabs against.
Certain deductions are allowed under the Income Tax Ordinance: Zakat paid via scheduled banks, approved pension contributions, and some medical allowances. Subtract these from your gross income to get your taxable income.
Locate your taxable income in the FBR slab table. Add the fixed tax for your bracket plus the percentage rate on the excess above the lower slab limit. This gives your total annual income tax due.
If your income exceeds PKR 10 million, add a 9% surcharge. Then subtract any withholding taxes already deducted at source (salary deductions, bank withholdings) to find your net tax payable on filing.
Skip the manual calculation. Use our free calculators to get an instant, accurate breakdown including your monthly deduction, effective tax rate, and full slab-by-slab breakdown.

Pakistan's FBR uses a progressive tax system — only the income within each bracket is taxed at that slab's rate, not your entire income. Effective July 1, 2025.
| Annual Income (PKR) | Tax Rate | Fixed Tax (PKR) | On Excess Above (PKR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to PKR 600,000 | Exempt (0%) | — | — |

| Annual Income (PKR) | Tax Rate | Fixed Tax (PKR) | On Excess Above (PKR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to PKR 600,000 | Exempt (0%) | — | — |
| PKR 600,001 – 1,200,000 | 15% | — | 600,000 |

| Above PKR 5,600,000 | 45% | 1,610,000 | 5,600,000 |
Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that slab's rate — not your entire income. A PKR 2M earner does not pay 15% on the full amount.
These slab rates apply to active filers on FBR's Active Taxpayer List (ATL). Non-filers pay additional withholding taxes on every transaction.
Income exceeding PKR 10 million per year attracts a 9% surcharge on top of the calculated slab tax. Our salary tax calculator includes this automatically.

Straight answers to the most common questions about Pakistan's income tax system, FBR rules, and how to use our free calculators — updated for Tax Year 2025-26.
Under the Finance Act 2025, the annual tax-free income threshold in Pakistan is PKR 600,000. Any salaried individual earning up to PKR 600,000 per year pays zero income tax. Income above this amount is taxed progressively under FBR slab rates effective from July 1, 2025. Use our free salary tax calculator to get your exact liability based on your income.
To calculate salary tax in Pakistan, determine your annual gross income and apply FBR's progressive slab system. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate — not the entire amount. For a PKR 1,200,000 annual salary: only PKR 600,000 (the portion above the free slab) is taxed at 5%, giving PKR 30,000 annual tax. Use TaxCalculators.pk's salary tax calculator for a full, instant breakdown including monthly deduction and take-home pay.
A filer is a taxpayer listed on FBR's Active Taxpayer List (ATL), meaning they have filed their income tax return for the most recent tax year. Filers enjoy significantly lower withholding tax rates on bank transactions, property purchases, vehicle registration, and prize bonds. Non-filers pay double or more on every transaction. Becoming a filer requires filing a return through the FBR IRIS portal before September 30 each year.
Freelancers in Pakistan who earn IT export income through official banking channels and are PSEB-registered pay a reduced 0.25% fixed withholding tax under Section 154A. Freelancers earning from local clients apply standard non-salaried progressive slab rates. Use TaxCalculators.pk's dedicated freelancer tax calculator, which handles both regimes and covers platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, Payoneer, and direct bank remittances.
The standard income tax return filing deadline in Pakistan is September 30 each year, covering the tax year that ended June 30. Missing this deadline can result in a PKR 1,000 per week penalty under Section 182, loss of Active Taxpayer List (ATL) status, and higher withholding tax rates on all future transactions. FBR occasionally extends this deadline via official notification on the IRIS portal. Use our tax return filing guide to file on time.
The PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) tax is a device registration fee charged on imported mobile phones to activate them on Pakistani networks. It includes regulatory duty, customs duty, 17% sales tax, and withholding tax. The total depends on the phone's USD retail price and registration type (CNIC for residents, passport for overseas Pakistanis). Use our PTA mobile tax calculator to get an instant estimate for any brand or model.
A National Tax Number (NTN) is registered through the FBR IRIS portal. Provide your CNIC details, contact information, and employment or business details. After verification, FBR assigns your NTN and you appear on the system as a filer after submitting your first return. You can then verify your status on the Active Taxpayer List. Our professional tax services can handle your NTN registration from start to finish.
Yes. A 9% surcharge is levied on the total income tax payable by individuals and AOPs whose annual income exceeds PKR 10 million. This surcharge applies on top of the standard progressive slab tax. For example, on an annual income of PKR 12 million, you first calculate tax using the standard slabs, then add 9% of that tax figure. TaxCalculators.pk's income tax calculator automatically includes the surcharge when applicable.
